{"id":18,"date":"2008-10-10T15:36:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-10T15:36:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-02-17T04:18:28","modified_gmt":"2020-02-17T04:18:28","slug":"dont-panic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.planinatrix.com\/?p=18","title":{"rendered":"Don&#8217;t Panic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As famously immortalized in the book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hitchhikers-Guide-Galaxy-25th-Anniversary\/dp\/1400052920\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_7?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1223653411&amp;sr=8-7\">The Hitchhiker&#8217;s Guide to the Galaxy<\/a><\/em>, the phrase &#8220;Don&#8217;t Panic&#8221; is very useful these days.<\/p>\n<p>My 401K was down over 19% when I looked at it this morning. However, after I finished gasping for air and mentally screaming I smacked some sense into myself. At my age, I am a long term investor and I&#8217;m committed to returns over time, not just this week. The <em>New York Times<\/em> has an interesting article that highlights some of that viewpoint:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/10\/09\/business\/yourmoney\/09money.html?partner=permalink&amp;exprod=permalink\">http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/10\/09\/business\/yourmoney\/09money.html?partner=permalink&amp;exprod=permalink<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite daily and yearly fluctuations, if you look at the trend for the US stockmarket over the past 100 years, it trends up. This information was presented in a chart in my finance textbook. I&#8217;ll post it if I have time to dig out the source.
